Based on archeological findings and written documents, it has been proven that people have lived in this area continuously from prehistory to the present day.<\/p>\n
The first settlements were built in the 11th century, and the name Palanka was mentioned in 1593. The course of the Danube River passes through the territory of the Municipality for a length of about 35 km (1315 rkm - 1280 rkm). Based on the data of the Museum in Ba\u010dka Palanka, 33 archeological sites were discovered on the territory of the municipality, but to a lesser extent. Among them, sites from the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages stand out in number, preservation and significance.<\/p>\n
The municipality of Backa Palanka borders on eight municipalities, four of which are in Backa (municipalities of Bac, Odzaci, Vrbas and Backi Petrovac), three in Srem (municipalities of Sid, Sremska Mitrovica and Beocin), and south of the Danube is Vukovar municipality in Croatia. According to its position on the road network in the region, the municipality of Backa Palanka is located on the border of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska) and Serbia. Backa Palanka is located 40 km west of Novi Sad, 122 km north-west of Belgrade, 107 km south of Subotica, 323 km south of Budapest and 564 km south-east of Vienna. The average altitude of the municipality of Backa Palanka is about 80 meters.<\/p>\n
The territory of the municipality is located in the temperate continental climate zone. All settlements in the Municipality are connected by a network of main, regional and local roads in the length of 300 kilometers. Due to its position, favorable climatic conditions (Pannonian plain, Danube river and slopes of the mountain Fru\u0161ka Gora) Ba\u010dka Palanka has conditions for significant tourism development. This environment has a continental climate with four seasons and an average summer temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n
According to the last census from 2002, the municipality of Palanka had a total of 60,966 inhabitants. The population density of 101.6 inhabitants per km2 is also higher than the Vojvodina average (93.6). The area of the municipality is 577 km2.<\/p>\n
